Multimodal AI

Definition

Multimodal AI is AI that can work with more than one kind of input or output, such as text, images, audio and video, in the same conversation. You can show it a photo or screenshot and ask about it, or describe a picture and get one made.

Also called: multimodal model, multimodality

At work it means you can stop typing out what you're looking at. Upload the chart or the error screen and ask your question about it directly.

How it works

Two directions are worth telling apart. Vision is reading: the model takes in an image and describes it or answers questions about it. Image generation is making: you describe what you want and a model draws a new picture. Audio follows the same split, with speech in and speech out.

Both directions are conversational, so you refine with follow-ups like "crop tighter" or "softer colors" instead of starting over.

Example

A paid-social manager screenshots a breakdown table from her ads dashboard and asks which three ad sets had the highest cost per result last week and what they have in common. The model reads the figures straight off the image, so nothing gets exported first. She checks the three numbers against the dashboard before they go into her report.

Common mistake

Assuming one tool handles every format equally well. A tool may read images but not audio, or accept a PDF but skip the charts inside it. Test the exact file types your task depends on before you build a process around that tool.

AI vision (image understanding)
AI vision is the ability of an AI model to look at an image you give it, such as a photo, screenshot, chart or scanned document, and describe it, read the text in it or answer questions about it.
AI image generation
AI image generation is the use of an AI model to create a new picture from a written description, or to edit an existing image by describing the change you want. You describe the subject, style and format in plain words, then refine the result in follow-up messages.
Speech-to-text (AI transcription)
Speech-to-text is technology that turns spoken audio into written text. AI transcription models do this for recordings such as meetings and calls, so the words can then be searched, summarized or turned into tasks.
Generative AI
Generative AI is software that creates new content, such as text, images, audio, video or code, from a plain-language request. It learns patterns from large amounts of existing examples and produces fresh output that follows those patterns.
