AI for Marketing — Canva, Meta Ads & Google Ads

The platforms you already use now have serious AI inside them — and your assistant can increasingly operate them for you.

The big idea

💡Key idea
AI shows up in marketing at two layers: AI inside the platform (Canva's Magic Studio, Meta's Advantage+, Google's Performance Max) handles execution, while your AI assistant across platforms handles strategy, briefs, copy variants, and analysis. The winning workflow is to think and brief in your assistant, execute in the platform, and analyze back in your assistant.

  1. The winning division of labor in AI marketing:

Deep dive

5/5 open

AI shows up in marketing work at two layers, and confusing them causes mess. Layer 1 is AI inside the platform — Canva's Magic Studio, Meta's Advantage+, Google's AI-powered campaigns — optimized, native, and constantly updated; use these for what they're best at.

Layer 2 is your AI assistant operating across platforms — strategy, briefs, copy variants, analysis of exported data, and via MCP connectors, querying and managing campaigns conversationally. This is where your judgment and context live.

The workflow that wins: think and brief in Layer 2, execute in Layer 1, analyze back in Layer 2.

Canva's Magic Studio bundles AI across the design flow. Magic Design lets you describe what you need and get starting designs. Magic Write generates and rewrites on-canvas copy. Magic Edit, grab, eraser, and background remover handle photo edits in seconds that used to need Photoshop. Magic Resize turns one design into every format in a click. Brand Kit locks your fonts, colors, and logos so AI output stays on-brand — set this up before generating anything at volume. Bulk create merges a spreadsheet of copy variants into a template, producing 20 ad variations in minutes.

The complete pipeline: your assistant writes the carousel text in your voice from your Project, Canva's template plus Bulk create (or the Canva MCP connector directly from chat) builds it, Magic Resize handles every format, and you schedule it — one idea to a full visual content package in under an hour.

Meta's ad platform has gone heavily AI-native — Advantage+ campaigns hand targeting, placements, and budget allocation to Meta's machine learning, with creative tools that generate backgrounds and text variations. Practically, this means feed the machine, don't fight it: modern Meta performance is mostly a function of creative quality and variety plus clean conversion signals, and micro-managing audiences the old way now usually underperforms broad plus AI optimization.

Your assistant's job is creative volume and strategy — writing 10 ad concepts across different angles with primary text, headline, and visual direction to brief into Canva. The analysis loop involves exporting campaign performance or connecting the Meta Ads MCP connector and asking which angles are winning by CPA and hook rate, what fatigue signals exist, and what next week's test plan should be. Ensure your pixel and Conversions API events are clean, since AI optimization is only as good as the conversion data it learns from. Never let AI silently control budgets without guardrails — set cost caps, review spend weekly.

Same philosophy, Google flavor. The AI-native surfaces are Performance Max, goal-based campaigns across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, and Maps from one asset pool, plus AI-driven search campaigns with broad match and Smart Bidding. Your assistant's highest-value contributions: search term intelligence — exporting the search terms report and asking for wasted spend terms and a negative keyword list with estimated savings, a single monthly ritual that often pays for every subscription in the course.

Also valuable: asset production at PMax scale, since PMax is hungry for headlines, descriptions, and images; RSA depth, writing many headlines and descriptions covering different angles; and conversational management via MCP, where a Google Ads connector lets you ask about performance changes and draft recommended changes — keeping actual budget or keyword pushes behind explicit approval.

Putting Layer 1 and Layer 2 together into a sustainable cadence: Monday (30 min) is a performance review conversation using exported or connected data from Meta and Google, producing what's winning, what's fatiguing, and this week's test plan. Tuesday (60 min) is a creative sprint — your assistant writes angles and copy per the test plan, Canva bulk-produces the visuals, and variants get queued in both platforms paused, pending approval.

Friday (15 min) is a spend and anomaly check, plus the bi-weekly negative keywords ritual, with learnings noted into your Project so the assistant gets smarter about your account every week. That's a functioning growth team's weekly rhythm, run by one person with AI leverage.

  1. Before bulk-generating designs in Canva you should:

Pitfalls & takeaways

Failure modes

  • Micro-managing audiences the old way instead of feeding Advantage+ broad targeting with creative variety
  • Generating Canva designs at volume before setting up your Brand Kit
  • Letting AI silently control ad budgets without cost caps or weekly review
  • Ignoring conversion signal quality — AI optimization is only as good as the data it learns from
  • Skipping the monthly search-terms/negative-keyword ritual that often pays for the whole subscription stack

Durable takeaways

  • Two layers: AI inside platforms (execute) + your assistant across platforms (think, brief, analyze)
  • Canva: Brand Kit first, then Magic Design/Resize/Bulk create for volume with consistency
  • Meta: feed Advantage+ with creative variety and clean signals; assistant = concept factory + analyst
  • Google: PMax/broad+Smart Bidding do execution; assistant owns search-term hygiene and asset depth
  • Guardrails always: caps on budgets, human approval on changes, weekly human review

  1. In modern Meta advertising, the biggest performance levers you control are:

Do the work

🏋️Prove you learned it

In Canva, set up your Brand Kit, then use Magic Design to build one carousel from a brief your assistant wrote. Run the ad-concepts prompt for a real offer, pick three concepts, and build them. Then export last month's Google Ads search terms or Meta performance data and run the wasted-spend analysis, implementing the resulting negative keyword list.
