An AI operating system is not a product you buy. It's the deliberate combination of a brain — your daily-driver assistant, configured with Projects, Styles/instructions, and memory that encode your context; hands — a coding agent for file/data work; a nervous system — MCP connectors linking the brain to Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Notion, and your marketing stack; reflexes — Zapier/Make automations handling event-driven, repetitive flows; SOPs — your saved recipes, Skills, prompt library, and standing routines; and guardrails — the safety rules you've adopted, like draft-never-send and plan-before-execute.

The difference between someone who "uses ChatGPT" and an AI operator is not intelligence or technical skill. It's that the operator has made decisions once — about tools, context, routines, and rules — so that every subsequent day requires almost no decisions at all.

Seven questions define your v1: Which is your daily driver — ChatGPT or Claude? What are your top 3 pain points costing you the most hours weekly?

Which connectors do those pains require — usually Gmail, Calendar, and a task/notes tool? What's your one agent project for this month — receipts, Downloads folder, or data cleanup?

What's your one automation for this month — email-to-task is the default recommendation? Where will your prompt library and SOPs live — a Notion page, Project instructions, or Skills?

And what are your non-negotiable guardrails — defaults include nothing auto-sends externally, nothing deletes, budgets have caps, and tax/legal/medical get professional sign-off.

Ten rules keep your AI OS an asset instead of a liability: know each tool's data policy, since business/team plans generally offer stronger controls than consumer plans; client confidentiality travels with the data, needing a plan-level answer or client consent before it enters any AI tool; least privilege on connectors, connecting what workflows need and auditing quarterly; secrets never go in prompts — no passwords, API keys, or full card numbers ever.

Write actions need approvals; watch for prompt injection, treating unrequested AI-proposed actions as hostile until understood; verify before consequences like publishing, paying, signing, or filing; keep a human voice and disclose AI involvement where expected; back up before agent sessions touch important file sets; and review your memory/context stores occasionally, since stale context quietly corrupts future outputs.

Week 1 — Foundation (~3 hours): pick your daily driver and get the paid plan, create 2-3 core Projects with instructions and files, create your Style from writing samples and start your prompt library, practice iteration moves on real work, and run one Deep Research brief on a real decision. Week 2 — Connections (~2 hours): connect Gmail, Calendar, and Notion/Drive, adopt draft-never-send, build and run the Morning Brief for five days, and run inbox triage and meeting prep recipes.

Week 3 — Hands and reflexes (~3 hours): install Claude Code or Codex, do the AI-Workspace exercise, run the receipts pipeline or Downloads cleanup on real files, and build the email-to-task automation. Week 4 — Systems (~2 hours): adopt the weekly marketing rhythm if relevant, run your first Friday Shipping Review, convert your two best workflows into Skills, and write your guardrails document. Day 30 is the audit: honest hours saved, which recipes survived, what to kill, and what to add next month — repeat monthly, since your AI OS is never finished, it compounds.
