The AI tool universe collapses into six categories: chat assistants are the brain, coding/computer agents are the hands, MCP is the nervous system connecting AI to your apps, automation platforms are the reflexes, and creative and ad tools are specialized organs with their own built-in intelligence. A working AI setup combines several of these — recognizing when a chatbot is the wrong tool is a senior skill. The AI tool universe looks overwhelming, but for practical work it collapses into six categories: chat assistants (ChatGPT, Claude) for conversation, writing, and analysis; coding/computer agents (Claude Code, OpenAI Codex) that take actions on files, data, and code; the connection layer (MCP) that plugs AI into your apps and data; automation platforms (Zapier, Make) for if-this-then-that workflows between apps; creative tools with AI inside (Canva) for design and presentations; and ad platforms with AI inside (Meta Ads, Google Ads) for campaign creation and optimization. The pattern to internalize: chat assistants are the brain, agents are the hands, MCP is the nervous system, automation platforms are the reflexes, and creative/ad tools are specialized organs with their own built-in intelligence. A working AI operating system uses several of these together. Both are excellent, both evolve monthly, and most serious operators use both. ChatGPT (OpenAI) has the broadest consumer ecosystem: voice mode, image generation, Projects (custom GPTs are being retired in favor of Plugins), scheduled tasks, Deep Research, and Codex for agentic coding — a strong default if you want one app that does a bit of everything. Claude (Anthropic) is often preferred by professionals for the quality of its writing, long-document work, and reasoning that feels less generic — Artifacts, Projects, Skills, and a best-in-class agent story (Claude Code, MCP connectors, since Anthropic created the MCP standard).
