The AI tool universe looks overwhelming, but for practical work it collapses into six categories: chat assistants (ChatGPT, Claude) for conversation, writing, and analysis; coding/computer agents (Claude Code, OpenAI Codex) that take actions on files, data, and code; the connection layer (MCP) that plugs AI into your apps and data; automation platforms (Zapier, Make) for if-this-then-that workflows between apps; creative tools with AI inside (Canva) for design and presentations; and ad platforms with AI inside (Meta Ads, Google Ads) for campaign creation and optimization.
The pattern to internalize: chat assistants are the brain, agents are the hands, MCP is the nervous system, automation platforms are the reflexes, and creative/ad tools are specialized organs with their own built-in intelligence. A working AI operating system uses several of these together.
